My National Anthem

Being an American means that on July 4th every people you watch fireworks, drink beer and wear red, white and blue. It also usually includes celebrating independence. Being an American means that people from other countries will ask you why your country consumes so much fast food. Being an American means having constant debates about what healthcare plan will work best for our country. Being an American means hearing people complain about election results and then finding out they didn’t even vote in the first place. Being an American means being able marry whoever you want (if they want to marry you too). Being American means fighting for rights you believe you deserve. Being an American means understanding that progress is a process. Being an American means if you choose to go to college, you study for (usually) four years and graduate with a bachelor degree. Being an American means complaining about the reputation we have but doing things to perpetuate it. Being an American means forever hearing about The “real” housewives. Being an American means never really going over 80 miles per hour (legally). Being an American means having people ask you things like “who reads anymore anyway” (Obviously I do if there is a book in my carry on bag). Being an American means that other countries will think we’re all rich. Being an American means having the freedom to protest whatever you want to. Being an American means leaving America for Ireland and being completely unaware of how other countries function. But I’m excited to find out!
