An American girl in Belfast. She has no interest in the culture or really anything besides finding the best bars and pubs. She makes friends with a woman who lives in Belfast who also doesn’t seem to be interested in the history of Belfast. These girls are centered around a boy who seems bright and witty. He certainly has more experience with the history and even a desire to know more. It’s clear that This is Not a Play About the Troubles. Why? Because the girls wouldn’t allow it. I want to show that these women are so incredibly daft that the only things that matter to them are there own personal gain or the gain of others very close to them. When started my play I immediately decided that I needed to tell people the horrible aspects of the troubles but after being here for a week, I’ve decided differently. People here will openly talk about it for the most part but they almost always prelude it with something along the lines of “it’s not like that here anymore”. I’ve been confused about how I wanted to portray Northern Ireland since arriving but I’m starting to realize that what I want to portray something different and then show how the setting being in Northern Ireland affects the plot and the characters.
