Stuff in a Name

Dyflinn is the Viking name for Dublin, while Dublin is derived from Dubh Linn, which means “black pool.”

  1. In Old Norse it’s pronounced Dyflin.
  2. In Old English it’s pronounced Difelin.
  3. In modern Manx it’s pronounced Divlyn.
  4. In modern Irish it’s officially called Baile Átha Cliath, “Town of the Hundred Fort.”
